Impact of recessionary environment on the Biotech and Life Sciences Industry in Europe
Author: Neil Eisberg Editor – Chemistry & Industry
From the point of view of the European biotech and life sciences sector, the current economic situation has just added to the problems that it already faced. The pharma sector has been under pressure from governments to reduce the costs of prescription drugs while at the same time pharmaceutical majors have been experiencing shrinking pipelines.
A look at the financial performance of European pharma majors demonstrates the overall effect of these pressures and the impact of the recession. While sales have increased through the first half of 2009 for most, income is generally down. Swiss healthcare major Roche, for example, saw its first half sales rise by 5% to CHF24bn, but net income dropped 29% to CHF4bn. In terms of its pharmaceutical sales, the company reported a sales growth of 11%, twice the global market rate; however, a good proportion of this increase was due to sales of Tamiflu, boosted by the threat of an H1N1 virus pandemic.

Featured Article Cont'd.
Pharma majors have been looking to the biotech sector to fill those pipeline gaps through collaborations, or increasingly through acquisition of those collaborative partners. Roche’s takeover of Genentech earlier this year is perhaps the most high profile example.
Many pharma companies have been able to take advantage of the shortage of capital available to smaller biotech firms as a result of the severe cutbacks in the availability of credit from the major banks and venture capitalists. One US biotech observer said that many biotech firms had just a few months left of financing and in recent months there has been news of increasing numbers of those biotechs seeking a ‘white knight’ to purchase them or at least some of their intellectual property to keep them in business.
European pharma companies are also watching moves by Japanese competitors to partner with Indian companies, particularly as regards the development of generic pharmaceuticals, encouraged by the Japanese government’s moves to follow other developed nations in supporting the substitution of generics for branded prescription drugs. Currently generics account for around 5% of the Japanese market, worth around $3bn, but the government is hoping this penetration will increase to 30% by 2012/13.
For companies in the crop protection sector, there are different pressures that include the increasing resistance of pests to current products and burgeoning regulations, particularly within Europe that is limiting the range of products that can be used, while at the same time, there is an increasing pressure to feed an ever-growing global population and concerns about food security.
According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, agricultural output will have to double by 2050 to meet the needs of a global population that is forecast to reach over 9bn and to counter the problem of only the same, or possibly even less, land area currently under cultivation being available for food production by that time.
Three of the six major agrochemical companies are located in Europe and they are all confident that technology will meet this challenge. Indeed one former R&D director from one of the Big Three believes that if today’s best farming practices were adopted across the world then it should be possible to produce triple the amount of food.
There is also a consensus that the sector will have to continue product development across all three of the current approaches to pest management: conventional chemical, biotech and biocontrol. However, there are concerns that investment in plant science and agricultural development in general has fallen behind. Cooperation between farmers, crop protection developers, plant breeders and governments at all levels will be needed in the future.
